Come help FareStart harvest produce at Sound Sustainable Farms!
FareStart’s Food Recovery Team has generously been invited to harvest excess crops from Sound Sustainable Farms throughout the summer. These crops will be used in our hunger relief meals, and help FareStart incorporate fresh, local, and nutritious products into those meals, diversify ingredients, and minimize costs. The practice of gleaning also helps the farmer manage excess crop, control weeds and pests, and maintain nutrients in the soil.
Sound Sustainable Farms was created by Cedar Grove to utilize compost and organic practices to renew the land and grow fresh food for our local community. They are committed to farming organically, enhancing the land by adding compost and nutrients, providing educational opportunities for the community, and providing local jobs for farmers.
For those new to gleaning, gleaning is:
- The act of harvesting or collecting unused or surplus produce from farms and distributing it to those experiencing food insecurity
- Traditionally defined as gathering anything left over after a harvest
