Glean Lead Opportunity
Come help FareStart glean produce from The Food Bank Farm!
FareStart’s Food Recovery Team has generously been invited to harvest excess crops from Food Bank Farm. These crops will be used in our hunger relief meals, and help FareStart incorporate fresh, local, and nutritious products into those meals, diversify ingredients, and minimize costs. The practice of gleaning also helps the farmer manage excess crop, control weeds and pests, and maintain nutrients in the soil.
Food Bank Farm is a non-profit 15-acre farm dedicated to growing fresh, nutritious produce for food banks while providing volunteer opportunities for the community. In addition to gleaning excess crops, they will also be growing some produce specifically for FareStart’s hunger relief meals.
For those new to gleaning, gleaning is:
- The act of harvesting or collecting unused or surplus produce from farms and distributing it to those experiencing food insecurity
- Traditionally defined as gathering anything left over after a harvest
