Volunteer: Glean with FareStart at 21 Acres Farm

Join us at 21-acres Farm in Woodinville to Glean produce for the Community!

FareStart’s Food Security Team works with local partners to support our food rescue and access initiatives. From our local growers, we glean any goods that are seconds, in excess, or that they would like to donate. This product will be incorporated into our Community and School Meals.

21 Acres is a leader in sustainable and regenerative practices, serving as a living laboratory center for sustainable ways of living. Their purpose is to promote the benefits of local food systems within the context of climate challenges through their farm, community gardens, native plant nursery, education center, and more. 

For those new to gleaning, gleaning is:

The act of harvesting or collecting unused or surplus produce from farms and distributing it to those experiencing food insecurity Traditionally defined as gathering anything left over after a harvest

After the Glean you are invited to enjoy the amenities of 21 acres which include:

Visit Campus, they offer farm walks, building tours to learn about their LEED platinum certified building Community Events, learn more and register here: 21 Acres Classes and Events Farm Steward Saturdays each week from April to November-work alongside knowledgeable 21 acres staff on a variety of seasonal restoration and farm projects that build soil health and climate resilience. Spend time in one of Seattle’s most vibrant neighborhood markets while representing FareStart! As an Information Booth Ambassador, you’ll engage with community members, share our mission, and invite others to get involved through volunteering, dining, and supporting our programs.

What You’ll Do:

Set up and staff the FareStart information table Greet market visitors and spark conversation about FareStart Share information about our job training programs, social enterprise businesses, and community impact Answer questions and direct interested folks to volunteer, donate, or learn more Help with light set-up and breakdown of materials

Ideal Volunteer:

Friendly, approachable, and comfortable starting conversations with the public Passionate about community, food systems, or social impact Able to represent FareStart with enthusiasm and clarity (training and talking points provided) Reliable and able to stand for the duration of the shift

Impact:
You’ll help raise awareness about FareStart’s work transforming lives through food, job training, and community meals—connecting more people to meaningful ways to get involved.

FareStart’s job training programs operate at our retail and classroom locations.

We need your help to provide additional mock interview practice to our students as they prepare for interviewing in this constantly evolving job market. Mock Interview volunteers will interview students and provide feedback to students directly and to staff using a feedback form so that students can learn about best interview practices.

 

DUTIES

Work one-on-one with our students in a professional settingInterview students using common interview questions that are providedProvide verbal and written feedback to students on interview skillsProvide feedback to staff on student interviews, interview process and industry best practices

 

TIME COMMITMENT AND LOCATION

7:45am-9:15am Tuesdays and Wednesdays as scheduled

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in recruiting, HR or experience managing/hiring staff Excellent customer service and communication skills Ability to give constructive feedback and insightful interviewing tips Understanding of our students’ barriers to employment and expected boundaries Must be 18 years of age or older

Overview

FareStart provides job training and wraparound support services to individuals experiencing barriers to employment so that they have the tools, training and support needed to gain long-term employment. The Communications team works to generate awareness and support for our mission through email and social marketing, outreach materials, point of sale, public advocacy, and our website.

 

Tasks

This ongoing bi-weekly volunteer role will support in a variety of activities, including:

Transcribing and documenting quotes from student graduations and story-telling interviews Subtitling videos Inventorying and organizing content (photos, files, etc.) on shared Marcomm storage drive Inventorying and organizing content in Dropbox account Uploading content to various platformsImprove quality of website traffic through Search Engine Optimization (SEO)Google AdWords support Organizing and uploading content to External Affairs SharePoint site Other administrative tasks as needed

 

Schedule and Location

Up to 8 hours every other week Flexibility for onsite vs remote work shifts Office address:  700 Virginia St, Seattle WA 98101

 

Qualifications
